A lightweight operating system built from scratch.
01 / OVERVIEW
Imperial NextOS is an experimental operating system developed from scratch by Imperial Corporation.
Its goal is to explore a lightweight, minimalist system that gives users greater control over their machine.
NextOS is also a systems programming project focused on understanding how an operating system works.
Its development covers kernel design, memory management, file systems, hardware interaction, applications and a custom shell.
02 / UNDER THE HOOD
The technologies and components behind NextOS.
Written mainly in C, with a focus on low-level systems programming.
Designed for the i386 32-bit architecture.
Uses GRUB with Multiboot and targets Legacy BIOS.
Currently uses FatFs. Imperial QOSFS integration is planned for the future.
Discover QOSFS →Includes PCI and SATA/AHCI driver development.
Features a custom shell as part of the operating system environment.
03 / WHAT'S NEXT
Planned development goals, without guaranteed release dates.
Prepare the 0.1.9 R.S.V. milestone.
Develop kernel threading and multitasking.
Work towards virtual memory support.
Expand the boot process beyond the current Legacy BIOS target.
Explore networking support and a graphical user interface.
04 / TRY IT OUT
Download the experimental ISO and try NextOS in a virtual machine, for example with QEMU or VirtualBox.
The ISO is public. The source code is private.
